BMW Working on Another i3 Model with Higher Driving Range

  • BMW is reportedly working on another i3 model!

The new Electric Vehicle in the range is rumoured to offer both a sportier and high driving ride.

Sources claim that BMW is planning an additional i3 model. The new model in the EV range will deliver a higher driving range, but also offer a sportier ride. Rumor has it the new model will be called the i3s. 

The sources further claim to BMWBlog that the sporty angle of the i3 was also planned for the i3 Shadow Sport Edition. However the sport-tuned suspension was eventually nixed in the US from the range.

It is believed the new i3 would deliver additional power compared to the current i3. Other details such as the launch date are still unknown at the moment. 

The current i3′s electric drivetrain generates output of 125 kW/170 horse power. Similarly the car is able to produce a peak torque of 250 Newton meters. BMW is scheduled to refresh its i3 electric car with a higher energy density battery by July 2016.

Currently the i3 has an 8 x 2.7 kWh packs cell battery, with each cell containing 12 x 3.75 volt. The updated battery is expected to be a 94Ah battery.

The higher energy density will give the i3 an expected range of 120 miles. The current EPA rate of the i3 BEV is 81 miles, after testing the new rating will be released. 

BMW has suggested event he current i3 models could have the new battery installed. However the cost and process details are yet to be revealed after the market launch. It is possible the battery upgrade may be release as part of the sports upgrade. All the details will soon be released with the launch.
