The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational cold finally take place again as waves were high enough.
John John Florence from Hawaii won the 2016 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. The surfing event could not take place for the past six years as waves in the Waimea Bay, Oahu, Hawaii.

He was the best riding the up to 60-feet high wave that rolled in on Thursday. 23-year-old Florence won $75,000 - the biggest purse in Big Wave riding, with a 4-wave total of 301 out of 400 points.
“I was excited just to be part of the event,” said Florence after the win. “I was so nervous, I thought, oh gosh, I just gotta get through this day and hopefully get a couple of waves!"
John John Florence Florence beat previous Eddie winner Ross Clarke-Jones from Australia with a late charge in his 2nd round heat, posting his top two rides of the day during a flurry of gigantic waves.
Former event winner and younger brother to Eddie Aikau, Clyde Aikau (HAW) found a few good rides in Heat 3. The Hawaiian announced at the opening ceremony in December 2015 this will be his last time competing in the event commemorating his brother. "
