Lady Gaga’s performance went well at the Academy Awards on Sunday. She sang her song alongside several survivors of sexual abuse.
It was a poignant moment for a whole category of people who had been dealt with unjustly thanks to some cruel individuals of society. Lady Gaga sang Till It Happens To You, a song from her album The Hunting Ground on a white grand piano.

The song was about sexual assault on educational campuses throughout the United States. As she belted out the lyrics along with the notes of the touching song, the survivors formed a group all around her and looked on solemnly.
The Vice President, Joe Biden gave the intro with the words that all of America needed to make a formal pledge never to let this happen again. Where consent is due, nothing can happen without the prior consent of a person.
Lady Gaga wore a white suit and as she sat at the piano, the survivors started slouching their way onstage. They had messages written on their forearms such as “Not your fault” and “It happened to me”.
While the performance went brilliantly, Gaga did not get an award and lost out to Sam Smith.
Lady Gaga herself was raped at the tender age of 19. She literally relived that traumatic experience while making the song which is very emotional and causes feelings of empathy to be aroused in the listener.
She has gone on record to say that she hid the fact for more than half a dozen years or so. Only when she revealed it was a temporary catharsis possible.
She admits that it was like she was living with a nightmare. It cannot be expressed in words what she had to go through to cope with the deep, dark secret inside her. Many times she blamed herself for something which was someone else’s fault.
Her fiance was there at the Academy Awards. Lady Gaga mentioned that she cannot believe that someone loves her body, mind and soul. After the assault, she felt every part of her was not worthy of being loved. The devastating impact of rape at such a tender age left her personality in tatters.
Slowly she had picked up the pieces of her life and begun anew. Yet today she was so proud of her fiance since he had accepted her unconditionally. This was true love and it shone with an inner glow
