The new alternative-fuel IONIQ model is the world’s first car to offer a choice of three electrified powertrains.
Today at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, Hyundai announced the conception of the project IONIQ. The project IONIQ was launched along with the release of its very first model.
The IONIQ model is the first car in the world to offer three different electric powertrains. According to Hyundai project IONIQ will find ways to converge different technologies and suggest new mobility concepts. The project will discover how the auto mobile needs of the society are changing with time.
The IONIQ vehicle platform revealed at the Swiss convention contains three electrified power-trains. All the cars in the model make low- to zero-emissions.
“The future mobility lifestyles that we envisage is about staying connected to our daily lives all the time without being bound by the limitations of time and space,” said Euisun Chung, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor.
“We are determined to make this a reality so that everyone can enjoy better, more fulfilling lives,” added Chung.
The line-up consists of the IONIQ Hybrid, IONIQ Electric and IONIQ Plug-in. Hyundai claims the model delivers an uncompromising design and driving experience.
The platform also offers innovative technology in connectivity and safety. The IONIQ is an important milestone for Hyundai as it will support their organic sales growth in Europe.
In the platform both IONIQ Hybrid and IONIQ Plug-in will feature the new Kappa 1.6 GDI. The Kappa is a direct injection petrol, four-cylinder engine and comes with a thermal efficiency of 40%. Electric power for all the cars in the line-up is generated by a permanent magnet synchronous motor.

Tech features such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and TomTom live services are all available in the line-up. The IONIQ line-up consists of a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster display. The IONIQ Hybrid and IONIQ Plug-in come in Blue accents, while IONIQ Electric features exclusive copper accents.
