MediaTek Helio X20 Virtual Reality Software Support Unveiled

Mobile processor makers push into virtual reality market.

MediaTek announced at a conference in Shenzhen, China a virtual reality software development program. The MediaTek Helio X20 mobile SoC introduced in May of 2015 will support VR apps with 120Hz refresh rate.

The details are still sparse as only a short report on Taiwanese AppleDaily revealed the MediaTek X20 VR support. The MediaTek announcement comes though as direct response to yesterday's Qualcomm news.

Qualcomm has announced new virtual reality software development kit for its SnapDragon 820 processor. The new Snapdragon VR SDK is designed to abstract the complexity of immersive virtual reality and provide developers with access to optimized, advanced VR features, to simplify development and to help them attain improved VR performance and power efficiency with the Snapdragon 820 for Android smartphones and upcoming VR headsets. The SDK is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2016 through the Qualcomm Developer Network.

The MediaTek X20 VR software developer kit is expected to be similar to what Qualcomm will offer. The MediaTek X20 features a Tri-Cluster CPU architecture with 10 cores. The Tri-Cluster CPU consists of one cluster of two ARM Cortex-A72 cores (running at 2.5GHz for extreme performance) and two clusters of four ARM Cortex-A53 cores (one running at 2.0GHz for medium loads and one running at 1.4GHz for light activities).
MediaTek X20 powered smartphones are as far as we know only available on the Chinese market. The Acer Predator 6, Leagoo Elite Pro, Doogee F7 and the Zoppo Speed 8 are smartphones based on the X20.
