Sony PlayStation VR CUH-ZVR1 Details

Sony announced today the price and the release time frame of the Sony PlayStation VR virtual reality headset. Here are all details.

The Sony PlayStation VR wll go on sale in October for $399, just in time for the Holiday shopping season. If Microsoft is not coming out with a VR headset for the Xbox, the Sony PlayStation VR CUH-ZVR1 will become the bestselling virtual reality solution of 2016 because it is the most affordable. The install base of the Sony PS4 is about 36 million will also help quite a bit.

The HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift are just too expensive compared to the Sony PlayStation VR CUH-ZVR1 to reach the number of consumers Sony can reach this year.

The Sony PSVR will launch in Japan, North America, Europe and Asia in October at 44,980 yen, $399 USD, €399 and £349 price points. 

The specifications of the Sony PlayStation VR CUH-ZVR1 include 5.7-inch OLED panel with 1,920×RGB×1,080 resolution offering 960×RGB×1080 per eye. The supported refresh image refresh rates are 120Hz and 90Hz. The field of view is about 100 degrees.

The Sony VR headset has a six-axis motion sensor comprised of a three-axis gyroscope and a three-axis accelerometer. Connectors include on the     VR headset: HDMI, AUX, Stereo Headphone Jack and on the processor unit: HDMI TV, HDMI PS4, USB, HDMI and AUX.

The bundled processor unit is responsible for 3D audio processing, Social Screen (mirroring mode, separate mode) and Cinematic mode.

The Sony CUH-ZVR1 supports Cinematic mode, which lets users enjoy a variety of content in a large virtual screen while wearing the headset. Supported content for the Cinematic mode includes standard PS4 games and videos as well as variety of PS4 features including Share Play and Live from PlayStation.

Users will also be able to enjoy 360 degrees photos and videos that are captured by devices such as omnidirectional cameras on PS VR via PS4 Media Player, which will let them feel as if they are physically inside the captured scene.

The Sony PlayStation VR CUH-ZVR1 package includes VR headset, processor unit, headset connector cable, HDMI cable, USB cable, stereo headphones, AC power cord and AC Adaptor.

The complete the Sony PS4 VR setup, consumers need to get a PlayStation 4 camera and ideally PlayStation Move controllers. Sony will offer a Sony PlayStation VR bundle that will include these accessories. 

More than 230 developers and publishers are working on Sony PlayStation VR software titles, from smaller independent teams to larger studios at the industry’s top publishers such as 2K Games and Ubisoft.

Software titles in development for PS VR from these developers and publishers as well as from SCE Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) are now totaling to more than 160 titles, and over 50 of those titles including Eagle Flight (Ubisoft), EVE: Valkyrie (CCP Games), Headmaster (Frame Interactive), Rez Infinite (Enhance Games), Wayward Sky (Uber Entertainment), RIGS: Mechanized Combat League, Tumble VR, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood and PlayStation VR WORLDS (SCE WWS) are expected to launch by the end of this year. Additionally, Electronic Arts Inc., DICE and Lucasfilm are working on an all-new Star Wars Battlefront (Electronic Arts Inc.) gaming experience only for PS VR.

Furthermore, THE PLAYROOM VR by SCE WWS will be available as a free download from PlayStation Store to all PS VR owners, simultaneously with the launch of the system.

The Sony PlayStation VR Pre-order started in select markets.
