The BMW Chairman of the Board of Management, Harald Krüger, made the announcement.

BMW just confirmed the new i8 Spyder will arrive by 2018. The news was announced by Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

BMW had first started talking about a convertible version of the i8 four years ago. BMW has been basically been teasing fans with speculation of an i8 Spyder.

BMW even released a convertible the BMW i Vision Future Interaction in the meantime. It was launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2016. 

So what makes the i8 Spyder such an attractive and desirable car? The i8 Spyder will supposedly have a design that will be slightly updated compared to the concept version.

The i8 Spyder will also be open top. So the open-top i8 will be built under the codename i15 at BMW. It is speculated the new BMW will embody the future of cutting-edge.

The i8 Spyder is also rumored to represent emotionally appealing mobility concepts. According to BMWBlog, the i8 Spyder will be a two seater like other standard i8 cars. The i8 Spyder will blend lightness, dynamic capability and efficiency with a very special aesthetic allure.

The i8 Spyder will most probably be a hybrid with an updated battery pack and a potential increase in power. The current i8 is capable of 360 horsepower and hits 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The i8 Spyder is expected to have more drivetrain then the current one.
