Uber may be looking into shopping for 100,000 autonomous cars, and their first choice is Mercedes.
Everyone knew Uber might make an order for autonomous cars at some point. However recent rumors seem a little too far-fetched. According to Reuters Uber may spend $9.6 billion on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans.

The Reuters report further claims Uber is looking to shop for 100,000 autonomous cars. The story was first published in the German business magazine Manager Magazine.
The magazine claims Uber has already ordered 100,000 Mercedes S-Class sedans. In the US, one S-Class retails for $96,000. If Uber did order such a fleet of S-Class then Mercedes may have given them a discount.
Since Uber itself is worth at $62 billion it seems plausible it would shell out $9.6 billion to buy more cars. On the same note Mercedes announced they sold around 100,000 S-Class in total worldwide in 2015.
So the fact Uber may have acquired such a fleet of cars is not believable when its system runs just fine. Although right now the deal seems like a far-stretch in the future it may be possible.
Currently Uber’s biggest cost is human drivers. As soon as autonomous cars become common on the roads, Uber may out all the drivers.
Another glitch was the fact Mercedes S-Class is not even autonomous yet. Although many speculate the full-size flagship sedan will be the first model to include full autonomy.

But it may be a few years before it comes to pass. All in all many statements cloud the authenticity of the report. Uber days where robots may be handling cars are coming but not yet.
