It has been shown that the IQ of kids can change from high to low and back much more than was assumed previously.

Human beings are complex creatures. We are a product of our genes and our environment not to mention our choices. So the question of nature versus nurture is an age old one and has puzzled everyone since times immemorial. It could have a lot to do with the law of chance or probability.

49% of the traits were down to genes while 51% were due to the environment. While scientists still discuss the nature-nurture controversy, psychologists are seeking the criteria of intelligence.

Most researchers have agreed upon the fact that it is a mix of genetic influences and environmental experiences that determine IQ. However, it is there that the matter comes to a close.

Further information is not forthcoming. The latest evidence points out that environmental effects are limited and ultimately it is nature which is the shaper by default. This automatically causes a shift in intelligence.

The study was conducted on making environmental interventions into the lives of 985 low birth-weight kids. According to HuffingtonPost, the interventions included taking iron supplements and attending preschool classes instead of staying at home.

All the children had experienced a stimulating and rich environment during the first three years of life. They were given tests at the age of three in order to determine their intelligence.

The markers were those of general intelligence and included: knowledge skills, quantitative reasoning ability, visual-spatial processing power, memory and reasoning capability.

At the ages of five and eight these children were tested once again. Although environmental interventions boosted intelligence, the effect was temporary.

The gains in intelligence weared out with the passage of time. They seemed to fade out. The fact of the matter was that just by changing one single factor, you could not change intelligence over the long haul.

It was just not possible. Ultimately, the rich environment changes and the kids went right back to their normal day to day lives in te context of their own homes.

While intelligence levels do fluctuate to meet the demands of an intense and rich environment, once that environment ends and the guards are let down, the intelligence returns to baseline levels.

Furthermore, high intelligence at a particular stage in life does not necessarily translate into high intelligence during another period of life.
