In the last few years, you may have noticed that Starbucks has taken a few huge steps in their food offerings. They have been offering a large number of breakfast and lunch foods as well as their typical pastries. However, they have also been throwing away large quantities of food as well. Founder and CEO Howard Schultz said that he wants to change that so that those who don't have food to eat can get more.

Schultz explained that they are working toward donating 100% of the unsold food to the Feeding America food bank. They will mostly be donating sandwiches and salads. According to Feeding America, 70 billion pounds of food are wasted in the U.S. every year.

He also explained to Forbes that the barista were the ones who pushed for it, after they knew that they threw away tons of food each and every day.

“Our people just felt so badly. And this has been going on for quite some time,” he said. “And so we started doing our homework — municipality by municipality.” With 7,000 stores, that’s a lot of homework.

They have been donating their pastries for the last six years, using a pickup service. However, they are a little easier because they last longer and don't perish in a short amount of time. Sandwiches and salads have only a short shelf life, and they need to go faster. They are still figuring out how to make it work, but they have some ideas.
