This is how the Tesla Model 3 pre-order worked for me at the Tesla Motors Store in Munich, Germany.
The Tesla Model 3 pre-order has started at Tesla Motors retail locations around the world. Elon Musk will unveil the Model 3 on March 31st at 8:30pm PST. At this time the online pre-order for the Model 3 also starts. I decided to improve my chances to get a Tesla Model 3 as early as possible in Germany and drove to the Tesla store in Munich.

I arrived 15 minutes before the store opened and the line had about 50 people. As described in my earlier report about the line at the Tesla Munich Store, I was inside the store after a wait of one hour.
The Tesla Store in Munich had three salespersons taking reservations for the Model 3. On average it took less than 5 minutes to make the Model 3 reservation. With an iPad running an app with a single page input form, the Tesla employee recorded my details.
You need to bring an ID and your credit card for the reservation. There is no card swiping going on. The credit card number and expiration date is noted down in the iPad app.
After all my details have been typed in, I got the honors of pushing the red submit button to finalize my Model 3 reservation. That is it.
The team at the Tesla Store made the experience very enjoyable. After the reservation, customers got invited to a glass of sparkling wine and cup cakes to celebrate the reservation and mingle with other Tesla early adopters.
Minutes after I hit the submit button on the iPad, I received a welcome email from Tesla asking to setup an account. In the account I found my Model 3 reservation number which starts with "RN" and a 9-digit number and my address details.
As a courtesy to others waiting in line, don't ask a lot of questions. There is nothing to read as well. Just give them your details and credit card and move on so the next in line can make his reservation.
The line at the Tesla Munich store consisted mostly of men. There have been not more than 5 women in line. You had all age groups above 20 in the line.
It will be two years until I would potentially receive the car in Germany. Tesla starts the roll out in the United States first. The earliest delivery can customers living on the west coast expect. For Germans this means the first Model 3 arrive in 2018. One person in line said that you have to add at least 6 months to every date Elon Musk puts out.
Customers who pre-order a Model 3 today at a Tesla Store put down $1,000 for a car that they have not seen and will not be able to receive for about 16 months, if everything works after the plan.
There will be a live broadcast on the Tesla site of what Elon Musk calls now part 1 of the Model 3 unveiling. Part 2 will be closer to the production of the Model 3, slated to begin in 2017.
