Tesla Motors said that the Model 3 is the next logical step of Tesla's "secret master plan" and mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. Elon Musk has unveiled an affordable electric car that looks stunning and has outstanding performance for a mid-size sedan.
Like every Tesla, Model 3 is engineered to combine range, performance, safety and utility. The design maximizes interior space, to comfortably fit 5 adults and all of their gear. The Model 3 features a single glass windshield and sky roof. The front row is further to the front of the car than in other cars.
The design of the Model 3 is very sporty. The front looks much cleaner and stronger than the Model S. Also the rear looks much more refined. An interesting detail are the different shaped door handles in the three Model 3 cars presented on stage during the presentation. The dark grey model has straight shaped handles, while the other two had "L" shaped door handles.
It could be that the grey Model 3 is the performance version.
The interior of the Model 3 will be a problem for some customers. There is only a giant touchscreen in the middle. There are no gauges and levers. The Model 3 will get the same advanced software features as the Model S and Model X, including Autopilot.
Elon Musk said that Tesla makes only fast cars and Model 3 is no exception. The high efficiency electric motor provides zero to 60 mph acceleration in less than 6 seconds. This acceleration is true of the base model. There will be faster Model 3 versions.
The Model 3 is equipped with electric all-wheel drive and safety in general is a priority for the Model 3 design. Musk says that the Model 3 should be the safest car in its class once testing completes.
Starting at $35,000 before incentives the Model 3 will have a minimum range of 215 miles. This is more than Musk mentioned before. There will be Model 3 versions with a higher range. The Model 3 can use the Supercharger network and the destination chargers, like the other Tesla cars. Elon Musk said that there will be 7,500 superchargers and 15,000 destination chargers in Europe, Asia, and North America end of 2017.
The Tesla Model 3 will go into production in late 2017, ramping Tesla vehicle production to 500,000 vehicles per year. A key to the Model 3 mass production is the Gigafactory. Musk said the Gigafactory is the largest building in the world by footprint.
There will be a second presentation for the Model 3 closer to the production that will reveal all details and options of the Model 3.
