India is to contribute its two cents worth towards the search for gravitational waves. It will be quite a quest for these elusive physical phenomena.
The US has signed on a new sidekick in its quest to learn more about gravitational waves. These are disturbances in the fabric of the space-time continuum that are catapulted into existence by giant objects.

Black holes that are undergoing mergers come to mind when we think of gravitational waves. It’s been a hundred years since the super-genius Albert Einstein proposed the existence of these strange quirky entities.
Evidence of gravitational waves came about in February of this year. LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) was the detecting agent.
Recently, a contract was signed with India to develop a similar detector in the Land of Holi and Diwali. The concerned officials have expressed their delight and joy at the monumental achievement-oriented task.
"Historic detection of gravitational waves opens up new frontier for understanding of universe," an excited Prime Minister Modi stated on February 11 following the announcement.
"Hope to move forward to make even bigger contribution with an advanced gravitational wave detector in the country," he added.
"What was significant about this project was that now India has agreed to be a part of this project," Swarup said in the briefing to NDTV on Thursday. "The possibility is likely to be central to this project partly on account of geography favouring us."
It will be a fun and interesting project that both the United States and India will spearhead on a joint basis. A deeper view into our universe along with a widening of the domain of our understanding concerning the phenomena of physics is the goal of this venture.
In addition to LIGO’s twin observation points, a third detector will be built on Indian soil. It will immensely aid in the gauging of gravitational waves. Their exact source of origin and means of travelling through the context of space will be discovered thanks to this scheme of things.
The officials spoke of how they would be looking forward to cooperating closely with their Indian counterparts. To discover the why and wherefore of these highly energetic entities would be a truly scientific endeavor.
LIGO is being currently souped-up to better detect weak gravitational waves out there. There is even a detector situated in Italy that will be operational soon.
Japan and Europe are both busy working on their own versions of LIGO. Once they are successful at the task, the search for gravitational waves will receive a much-needed boost.
The fact that India will now be playing a pivotal role in this quest means that the developing nations are catching up fast with the developed world. They are not to be left behind on the road to progress.
