Tesla Motors has to manufacture five times the number of cars it made last year. the 13-year-old car company has made to date about 100,000 cars, mostly Model S. Now Tesla has the task to manufacture 2.5 times as many Model 3 as soon as possible. Production of the Model 3 is supposed to begin early 2017, but with the huge number of reservations, Tesla can and has to change plans.
Tesla's Fremont plant has a 500,000 car per year capacity, but the company has not ramped up to that theoretical capacity by a long shot. Elon Musk made a point during the Model 3 presentation how important the Gigafactory is for the Model 3. Besides getting the Fremont plant up to full capacity, Tesla needs also in parallel get the Gigafactory producing hundreds of thousands batteries for the Model 3.

Elon Musk already hit a minor supply issue. He wants to give a token of appreciation for those who lined. He thought that maybe 20-30 people per store would line up, but not 800. The gifts are now on order.
It feels like the journey of the Model 3 just begun. I will be part of it. I made a Model 3 reservation at a Tesla Store before the Model 3 was unveiled. I am curious on how Tesla Motors will manage customer's expectations throughout the next almost 2 years until the Model 3 delivery begins. I will be reporting about the Model 3 journey until I have the chance to own one.
