Blessed with some of the most unique features in Hollywood, Swinton is known to play some eerie and very characteristically memorable roles in movies from the White Queen in Narnia or Gabriel in Constantine, Swinton has been known for her role playing and this time she has embraced yet another challenging role.
If anyone remembers, Tilda played the role of the androgynous character Orlando which was received with praise and wonder. Going back to the roots of playing an androgynous character once more, she was revealed in a Doctor Strange trailer to be playing the character of the mystical teacher, Ancient One.
Originally a man in the comic books, Marvel is emphasizing of the androgyny of the character and other than referring to the character as ‘she’ and ‘her’, there is no distinction as to what she truly is.
The emphasis is of course on the theme is everything is not what it seems and Swinton’s Ancient One is the embodiment of the concept. Kevin Fiege revealed in an interview with EW that Swinton developed the character herself and she was very excited about it.
One of the things that she came up with for the character was going bald. She requested Fiege to keep her baldness a secret just to maintain the intrigue of her character and covet the surprise that it did when the audience got a look at her character. Mostly, any transition made by any actor for a role is highly publicized.
Popular examples are Jared Leto publicizing his Green hair and tattoos for his role as Joker and Chris Hemsworth posting pictures of his overly deprived thin body for Heart of the Sea role. Still Swinton might be thought old fashioned to keep the mystery of her character and the changes she has made for it by keeping it under wraps.
