J.M. Barrie's classic children’s tale of The Boy Who Never Grew Up has been twisted, turned, and redone in so many ways that you'd think people are would be sick of it. However, Disney announced that they will be doing a live-action film inspired by the story of Peter Pan and his friends in Neverland - including Tinkerbell.

According to Deadline, David Lowery is attached to the film as both writer and director. He will have a co-writer in the form of Toby Halbrooks. The pair most recently teamed up to write and direct the live-action Pete's Dragon remake, which is based on the sometimes forgotten 1977 animated musical adventure that was one of the few directed toward boys. That movie is scheduled for release this summer.
Before to Pete's Dragon, Lowery was connected to the excellent Sundance show Rectify, he directed Ain't Them Body Saints, and was an editor for Upstream Color and Ain't Them Body Saints.
This announcement might come as a bit of a surprise to people who follow the box office, as the last venture into Peter Pan, this one from Warner Bros. Pictures, was a complete disaster. Disney has had success with the live-action remakes, however. They recently had success with the Cinderella remake and have a large number in the pipeline, including Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and an Emma Stone led Cruella De Ville. Of course, The Jungle Book is opening this weekend, is critically acclaimed, and is expected to do huge things.
Even though Pan tanked when it was released, the story itself actually has legs. Disney made the successful animated film that we all watched, the live action version on NBC with Allison Williams and Christopher Walken, and there is currently a version of the creation of the story doing fairly well on Broadway.

We'll have to wait and see if this latest live-action Peter Pan remake is any good, but first, we have to worry about casting.
