This weekend, we saw the dismal performance of the new Garry Marshall rom-com movie, Mother’s Day. Starring Kate Hudson, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Sudekis, Timothy Olyphant and a little bit of Julia Roberts sprinkled here and there across the movie. Gary Marshall might have been relying on the vast cast formula like in Valentine’s Day and Happy New Year to get another hit.

The theme for Mother’s Day was not typically romantic and it might earn more along the way to next weekend when Mother’s Day actually is but the audience were not charmed by the third movie of the big cast celebrating the holiday theme as they had before and throw it in with disappointing reviews from the critics, the film only managed to earn close to $8.3 million on the box office this weekend, according to Variety.
The big news that just came forward is that Julia Roberts who plays the role of an online shopping marketer and can deemed as a supporting role rather than a main role, donning on an Anna Wintour-ish kind of auburn wig only shot for the movie in four days. What’s more surprising is that she was paid $3 million for those four days alone.
That is a great amount considering all the other actors on the movie. Julia has been paid the same amount for six minutes’ worth in Valentine’s Day but that movie went on to earn a stellar $110 million which made $3 million seem ok since her chemistry with Bradley Cooper was one of the highlights in the movie.

In Mother’s Day however, with only $8 million on the box office, the big pay seems like an overkill. Another question that the movie’s performance has brought is whether Robert’s charm on the big screen is wearing off and her name is not enough to bring in the audience like it once used to.
