For families that have someone in a wheelchair, especially families that have someone younger in a wheelchair, they know the financial strain that one can put on someone. They are expensive to purchase, any maintenance requires even more money, and sometimes parts alone can cost thousands of dollars. Of course, some people are covered by insurance, but many more aren't.

Other than those problems, wheelchairs also just aren't that comfortable for so many people. Someone who needs one will have to settle for a generic that doesn't really fit them or wait a long time to get a customized model that still probably isn't perfect. However, a London design firm named Layer has a better way to get the best fit. Go, a prototype wheelchair that would make it easier to stay comfortable, is made with a 3D printer. The printer scans your body so that the seats, footrests, width, and length can match your exact dimensions.
In doing this, the wheelchair will account for your weight and create a center of gravity that reduces the chances of sliding down in the seat or tipping over the wheelchair.
It is really too soon to say when a wheelchair like this will go on the market, but it should be fairly soon because they are designed to become practical. It would take about two weeks to complete a customized wheelchair. A traditional personalized wheelchair takes about eight.
