Katzenberg praised the Cannes Film Festival for celebrating animated features and said that he hoped that it will keep supporting the animated movies to make them a great force in the film industry. They has asked the audience previously to turn their phones off and then asked them to turn them on before inviting the musical guests and the stars of the movie, Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick to a whole lot of screaming from the fans. The duo them performed a beautiful, acoustic version of “True Colours” from Cyndi Lauper. The movie is driven by music as all of its plot is based on happy singing and dancing multi-coloured trolls who were then shown in a clip following the performance.
The clips introduces the audience to Trollville where perpetual happiness rules and The Trolls, led by pink-haired Princess Poppy voiced by Anna Kendrick, dance, sing and hug all the time. These tiny creatures are colourful – their bright-hued hair would be considered punk in our world. They even poop pink cupcakes and bleed rainbows and they have a hug alarm, to remind them when it is time for a hug. Only Branch voiced by Justin Timberlake is the outcast and he is not as happy as the rest of the Trolls. He is less about fluff and more about “real” stuff and he is allergic to hugs.
We then get to see the Trolls’ worst enemy which is misery, and it comes in the form of Bergens who are giant creatures in a perpetual state of pessimism. Bergens are only happy when they are chomping on Trolls which they call Blanquette de Troll. So when a Bergen kidnaps several Trolls, Trollville is afflicted with sadness and everyone drained of color. These cute creatures don’t look as cute in gray. That is when Poppy and a reluctant Branch set out to save their friends and be happy-go-lucky again.
The movie features a great original soundtrack including the "Can't Stop the Feeling," by Justin Timberlake which is already topping charts. The rest of the cast include, Zooey Deschanel, Gwen Stefani, James Corden, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and John Cleese. The movie is set to release on November 4th.
