E3 2016 will miss out on new video game hardware announcements. The Tokyo Game Show 2016 in September is reportedly the show with the big 2016 video game hardware debuts.
The Tokyo Game Show 2016 (TGS 2016) will kick of September 15. Reports surfaced over the last hours that Nintendo will unveil the Nintendo NX at the TGS 2016. The timing fits, which makes this a plausible assumption. Nintendo has said that the new Nintendo NX will be released in March 2017. Team Mario has also said to not show anything about the Nintendo NX at the E3 2016 next month.

VR World mentioned in a report about AMD's 2016 Investor Day that the Nintendo NX will debut at TGS 2016. They did not back that statement up in any form. In the same report VR World says that the rumored Sony PlayStation Neo, earlier referred to as PlayStation 4.5, will also debut at the TGS 2016.
The Sony PlayStation Neo would adopt the 14nm AMD Polaris GPU, which would be running on 911MHz instead of 800MHz the GPU in the PS4 is running.
The PlayStation Neo (internal codename) is scheduled to be released along with the PlayStation VR headset. An upgraded PS4 would challenge the Windows PC based Oculus and HTC Vive. On the other hand a new PlayStation 4 is a bit early and might be a problem for current PlayStation owners. On the other hand Sony could conquer the Virtual Reality gaming market at a speed others will not be able to match.
Sony could be steam rolling the VR competition with a PlayStation that rivals Windows PC based VR rigs.
