Researchers have pointed out the hard fact that antidepressants are not just for curing depression. They serve several other functions as well.

The study has been published in JAMA.
Via electronic medical equipment, the data was recorded from 100,000 patients. Also over 185 physicians happened to participate in the study. The records that were perused ranged from 2006 to 2015.
Only 55% of the antidepressant prescriptions were solely for depression. Over 18% were prescribed for anxiety, 10% were for pain and 4% were for symptoms of panic.
There were other palliative purposes these antidepressants were being used for including digestive problems, sleeplessness and headaches. There in fact happens to be no correlation between antidepressants and depression. Such is the paradox.
This study has whipped up a whirlwind effort to re-label antidepressants for the other purposes they serve besides allaying depressive symptoms. It hardly comes as a surprise since even the FDA has approved of antidepressants for treating fibromyalgia.
Especially, patients who seek relief from many other diseases are given antidepressants by doctors. The strange biochemical pathways of the human brain are such that they prove susceptible to different drugs for different ailments and sometimes the same drugs for different ailments as well.
Many of the patients do not have access to specialists who will prescribe them the proper drug for their malady. So they wind up in the care of ordinary doctors who tend to prescribe them antidepressants for pain or insomnia.
While this trend is disturbing, it is the norm for now. Greater measures to have patients see specialists will result in the proper cure for such conditions as lack of sleep or debilitating pain in the future.
A pinpointed diagnosis is very important if the symptoms of the disease are to be allayed once and for all. Half of the headache of symptom erasure has to do with proper diagnosis.
