Actress Kristen Bell recently spoke out about her relentless struggle with depression which is known as the “Black Dog of the Mind”.

Kristen Bell wrote an essay for Time's Motto yesterday (May 31) about her relentless struggle with depression. According to Kristen Bell, when she was a teenager, her mother explained to her that if she felt down in the future she could always ask for help.

She could turn to relatives, family and a doctor too. She didn’t have to suffer in silence. Later on when Kristen was in college, she faced hard times and remembered the wise words of her mother. The negativity with which she built a prison around herself was enough to suffocate any reasonable person. 

Normally, Kristen Bell was a positive upbeat person. Yet in her college days a dark cloud seemed to engulf her on a permanent basis. There seemed to be no reason behind Kristen’s depression.

She had everything and lacked nothing in the way of friends or facilities. Yet there was something which was bothering her at an unconscious level. It seemed to drag her down like a heavy weight.

So Kristen decided to seek professional advice. When you repress your desires and inner self, the result is that you end up expressing the internal voice in a destructive manner. The body and mind seek to have their way and the symptoms of depression manifest themselves. 

It does not suit anybody to keep secrets inside their soul. Such an approach can only lead to the secrets rotting away in the unconscious where they influence external behavior in negative ways.

For the first decade and a half of her career, Kristen Bell never spoke up regarding her depression. It was the proverbial skeleton in the closet that she was afraid to reveal to the rest of the world. Yet depression is not something to hide behind in a neurotic manner. 

It is serious business. The suffering and isolation that she suffered is something about which only she was cognizant. She felt worthless and helpless. All she could think of was that she was a total failure.

At least 20% of Americans face some degree of mental illness. Yet there is light at the end of the tunnel. Kristen Bell ultimately made it out alive and well from her debilitating depression. It took work yet all the effort was worth it in the end.

Nobody has to feel alone regarding mental illness. There are those who care, be they professional or amateur in their outlook. Life is unfair and it is not easy surviving in a world gone wrong.

Talking with a professional about your feelings is the first step towards recovery. At least that is the way that actress Kristen Bell managed to find her way out of the sickness that was depression.
