After taking a shot at Apple with its ZenBook, Asus has now shifted its guns towards Microsoft with the launch of its latest Transformer 3. The Transformer 3 Pro looks like an impressive alternative to Microsoft’s two in one offering Surface 4. The Transformer 3 Pro is 0.15mm thinner than the Surface Pro 4, measuring in at just 8.35 (0.33 in).

It shares a lot of features with the Surface such as the ‘any angle’ kickstand which offers 170 degrees of articulation and similarly combines with a pen sensitive to 1024 levels of pressure. A good keyboard or in case of these hybrids, a good keyboard cover are essential to any device. Asus kept this in mind as the Transformer Cover Keyboard is fully backlit and has 1.4 mm key travel.
We can’t give an opinion about how it compares with the Microsoft Type Covers, but not having to pay extra for a keyboard is a nice touch. In comparison to the Surface Pro which only has one USB 3.0 port, the Transformer boasts a USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, an HDMI as well as a standard USB 3.0 plug. Another major plus for Asus with its new Transformer is the inclusion of Thunderbolt 3 with its 40 Gbps transfer speeds and 4k support, which make dealing with large photos or video files easier.
Asus didn’t leave anything out with the Transformer 3 Pro’s 12.6 inch screen. It beats both the iPad pro and the Surface pro with its 2880 x 1920 display which has a pixel density of 275 ppi, more than either of the two. If you are an avid movie watcher then you will be glad to know that the high resolution screen comes with dual front facing Harman Kardon speakers.
The Transformer 3 Pro leaves no one out as Gamers also get a look in, thanks to the RoG XG Station 2, a dock that includes an external graphics card for "desktop-grade graphics performance”. Although most hardcore gamers have desktops for such activities, the idea that one device can be used for work and play without compromising on portability of performance is attractive.

The Transformer 3 Pro comes with an Asus Universal Dock. Using the USB-C port, the optional dock gives USB-C, USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA and RJ45 LAN ports, in addition to a SD card reader. You also have the option for the pen, even though Asus includes the keyboard cover with the tablet. Versions of the Transformer 3 Pro will be available with Intel i5 and i7 processors, which have the option of pairing up with 16 GB of RAM and a solid state storage of 1 TB.
