A novel brain tumor cure seems to lead to the paradoxical effect of longevity in patients. This silver lining of sorts was seen in victims of an aggressive form of brain cancer when they recovered from the ailment.
A new treatment for a rapidly invasive form of brain cancer also has the side effect that it prolongs the lives of the patients. They turned out to be hardy and survive for longer in the true sense of the phrase “what tears you down also builds you up”. The research on this matter was conducted by a group of experts from the United States.

The issue was recurrent glioblastoma, which is a very pervasive brain disorder involving tumors that just won’t go away on their own. A genetically engineered virus was injected into the bloodstream of these patients as part of the experiment.
Glioblastoma is a deadly cancer that claims many lives each year. Normally, the tumor shows up even after radiation and chemotherapy are over. Most patients do not have long to live.
The patients in the study, who were 43 in number, were given Toca 511 and Toca FC. Their survival rates increased by 13.6 months. In the control group, the survival time span was just 7.1 months.
This is a radical improvement and cause for hope. Over 42% of the patients survived for two or more years. Although they experienced side effects, they managed to pull through and stay alive for a lengthier period of time than was the case in the past.
The report is about the effects of retroviral replicating vector (RRV). This is basically a modified virus. RRVs are very significant since they deliver a pinpointed gene to a cancer cell thus destroying it by introducing some instability into its makeup.
Toca 511 attacks cancer cells and introduces a gene that activates cytosine deaminase (CD). The cancer cells than manufacture CD on their own. That is when things start to get interesting.
Patients are given doses of the anti-fungal drug Toca FC. The routine is followed seven days a week per monthly basis. Sometimes it is followed on a two monthly schedule.
The anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is thus formed naturally in the cell and destroys the cancer. The body’s natural immune system is given a nudge via this method.
RRVs are thus the wave of the future as far as cancer treatments go. An Ancient Roman saying goes that “as long as there is breath, there is hope”. So to conquer cancer and help people live a long and healthy life is the goal of our postmodern medical establishment.
