Smartphone makers reportedly order foldable AMOLED displays for 2017.

Display makers show off foldable and rollable displays since years. Recently a fully bendable smartphone based on graphene screen technology made some headlines. The bendable smartphone is supposed to go on sale in fall. According to a new report 2017 will be year that the first foldable smartphone will be released on the market.

Makers of smartphones, tablets and other hand-held devices have asked for foldable AMOLED panels beginning 2017 reports Digitimes citing industry sources. The report says that there are still technological barriers display makers have to solve. These challenges include replacing glass substrates with polyamide substrates, and glass covers with covers made from composite plastics as well as changes in polarizer materials.

Rumors about a Samsung Galaxy X foldable smartphone have already been swirling around last month. Samsung could be one of the first introducing a foldable smartphone. Samsung patents have already surfaced detailing foldable portable devices. Samsung already showed off a foldable smartphone in a video in 2013. Watch below.

A foldable smartphone has the advantage of carrying around a much bigger screen that can be unfolded when needed. Foldable devices could become a huge thing for smartphones, tablets and also for laptops in the near future. 2017 is just 6 months away, time to get excited about foldable smartphones.
