Stephen Amell says that he wanted to put his own style in the role of Casey Jones so he avoided getting dredged in research.
It can be suspected that very few stars playing comic book heroes actually read about their characters. The comic books have elaborated a lot on each and every character. One can just know the ins and outs of their character while reading comic books or just playing a rebooted version of an already established character.

The key is to make it work though. Every actor has their own style and their own flair to add to any character that they are playing. For Stephen Amell, playing Casey Jones was similar to that challenge. Having already almost nailed Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow in the CW show Arrow, Stephen had some barriers to break. He has become iconic for his role as the bow wielding superhero. To change that perception and embrace another hero’s role would have been very difficult.
Stephen however was up for a challenge. He told EW that he has been trying to get into movies for a while. Not just any movies but movies that are close to his forte of action and ass-kicking. He also had to find a movie that would fit into his show schedule. That is when he found the role of Casey Jones on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
According to Stephen, he wanted the role. He auditioned for it. Made a tape in which he showed his matter. He sat down for a chemistry reading with Megan Fox and he got the part. He did not go deep into research for his role however.

He said that he wanted to make Jones’ character his own way. When you do research, you just dredge yourself with compulsions of playing a role in a certain way. Stephen said that he’s tried to make Casey more like him. Fun and action packed which is different from his role of Oliver Queen.
