  • Study proves that Fish can tell One Human Face from Another

A recent study proved that fish can tell one human face from another at the drop of a hat.

Can somebody’s pet fish in the aquarium recognize the owner’s facial features? It appears to be the case that it definitely can. Archerfish were put beneath the microscope of observation and the results poured in. These fish can tell their owner’s face from a dozen other faces. They can perform this facial recognition with the greatest acumen. This study carries the utmost importance. It is the first time that such primitive creatures on the evolutionary ladder such as fish are showing this tendency.

All human faces have two eyes perched on top of a nose along with a mouth. As human beings, we tell the difference between one face and another by sheer analysis. We can tell the subtle differences between one face and another.

Our smart brain along with our complex intelligence aid us in this quest. Primates and some birds can do this as well. Yet the fact that fish can do this as well comes as a surprise if not a shock. Fish have small brains and they would have had no reason to recognize human faces in their evolutionary history.

The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

It has turned all the scientists’ models upside down and topsy turvy. Also it has caused a plethora of questions to mount in the form of a large question mark before the experts.

Can a pet goldfish recognize who its owner is? Can fish recognize each other? What the scientists were after was the answer to the question that whether fish were able to recognize facial patterns.

An archerfish is a tropical species. These fish throw water from their mouths at insects in an attempt to make a prey of them. Archerfish show their response of spitting very clearly.

Scientists presented pics of human beings to the archerfish and waited to see which one they would spit at. They had been trained via conditioning. Everytime they spat at the right photo, they got a bribe in the form of a food pellet.

The remarkable thing was that these fish chose the right face in a correct manner up to 81% of the time, according to CNN. This is just a beginning. The scientists plan on going the whole hog.

They will be testing much more than human faces with these intelligent fish. Whatever the case, for now it is indeed a possibility that your pet goldfish knows you by your facial features.
