It has been found that those teenagers who try e-cigarettes are more likely to also try real cigarettes later on.
Teenagers who have taken many puffs on e-cigarettes may also be likely to move on to the real thing. This hardly comes as a surprise. The study found that juveniles who allow e-cigarettes into their lives may become bolder in their subsequent choices.

The problem is that these newer choices are much more harmful than the former. E-cigarettes involve vaping and they include nicotine and a flavor.
The study involved over 300 high school students, according to Reuters. Two years ago, half of them said that they had given e-cigarettes a try. A year ago 40% of them who had tried e-cigarettes had also tried the real tobacco product.
Only 11% of those who had not tried an e-cigarette had tried real cigarettes. This trend clearly shows that we graduate from lesser evils to greater evils.
Those teens who had tried e-cigarettes actually had a six times higher chance of trying real cigarettes. If intentions are anything to go by, even among those who had no motivation to start smoking, the rate of real cigarette use still stood at a high percentage.
This suggests that greater governmental regulation is needed regarding this problem. For one thing, warnings on tobacco products is a must. Then it must be ensured that most teens below a certain age never get to use cigarettes or e-cigarettes for that matter to begin with.
The FDA has taken steps in the past which include a ban on sale of e-cigarettes to those teens who are under 18. Yet more needs to be done. There are those who disagree with the findings regarding e-cigarettes and cigarettes. They point to inconsistencies in the heuristic tools used in the study.
Thus the question whether puffing on e-cigarettes is a step-by-step exercise for real cigarette consumption remains a moot point. The original study remains intact though and it shows that those teens who vape e-cigarettes tend to graduate to the real thing pretty soon.
It is almost like any other addiction where more and more is needed as time moves on in order to remain just as high as before. Many still thing that vaping e-cigerattes is a harmless pursuit yet the facts do not lie. They show that it is just a beginning on the journey to harder intoxicants such as tobacco and possibly even deadlier inhalants.
