Scientists are saying that it could take millennia for humans to contact alien life forms.
For those UFO enthusiasts who say that alien life forms exist and are probably looking at us right now, there is a slightly depressing bit of news. It could be awhile before aliens are contacted by humans.
Via a combination of the Fermi Paradox and the Mediocrity Principle, astronomers have given the verdict on aliens. They won’t “phone home” in the E.T movie-like version for at least 1500 more years. So all ufologists and SETI aficionados can take a back seat and let their passions simmer down for now.
While aliens have not been heard from despite all the signals caught by radio astronomy and efforts of astrophysicists, that does not mean that there is no intelligent life in the universe other than our own.
Although we haven’t got it figured out just yet, 1500 years from now, things will be different. By that time, we will have built such sophisticated technology that it may pick up signals from aliens who are trying to contact us humans.
“We haven’t heard from aliens yet, as space is a big place – but that doesn’t mean no one is out there,” said Cornell student Evan Solomonides.
Evan Solomonides presented “A Probabilistic Analysis of the Fermi Paradox” at the American Astronomical Society’s meeting which was held yesterday in San Diego. Yervant Terzian, Cornell’s Tisch Distinguished University Professor of Astronomy, is the co-author of the paper upon which this presentation is based.
“It’s possible to hear any time at all, but it becomes likely we will have heard around 1,500 years from now,” said Solomonides. “Until then, it is possible that we appear to be alone – even if we are not. But if we stop listening or looking, we may miss the signals. So we should keep looking.”
While we are not alone, for now we do not possess the ability to listen to subtle signals coming from outer space. That does not in any way mean that a similar trend will reign supreme in the future.
If we keep at it, there is a possibility that in the far off future, alien signals will be intercepted by the astronomers’ receptive equipment. The thing is to remain vigilant and never miss out on even the weakest of signals.
According to the Fermi Paradox, there are so many planets, stars and galaxies in the known universe, that the chances of life are definitely there. As for the Mediocrity Principle, it says that the earth is not unique in that its makeup supports life forms. Other life havens could exist in the far off pavilions of deep space.
The earth’s television and radio signals are one means of alerting aliens to our existence. It has been barely 80 years since these signals have been spreading throughout space at the speed of light. Yet for any aliens out there, these signals are meaningless. That is because deciphering them is a backbreaking task.

However, there is still cause for hope. The thing is to give the process some time. Maybe than one fine day in the future, we will receive signals from outer space that were sent by little green men. Until than, we are for all purposes alone and on our own as a species.
