One of the interesting things that have been discovered post release of iOS 10 in its initial beta form by developers is the fact that it offers more storage space than previous iOS releases. This little tidbit hadn’t been mentioned by Apple and is a result of exploring all the features the new iOS has to offer by a user via Reddit.

The increase in space is impressive as you will have 122 GB of free space with the installed iOS 10 beta compared to the 113 GB space left after installing the iOS 9.x.x in a 128 GB iPhone. This is a great news for iPhones with larger storage space as the 16 GB iPhone just gets a gigabyte increase in storage with this 8% bump up.
More space is something to applaud and appreciate regardless of how much you are getting. Something is better than nothing right? We currently have three probable theories which might have led to increased storage space but they are a result of rather elaborate guess work with one of the theories seeming pretty far off indeed. So the first and most apparent reason which could certainly be a possibility is iOS 10 takes less storage space than iOS 9.

The second theory has something to do with counting system. It is quite likely that the new iOS uses the 1000 based counting system rather than the 1024 based system because 113.46 GB equals 121.83 GB if you use the alternate system. And the most absurd theory is that Apple File System (APFS) which is still in its developing stage meant for iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS was used here which led to the increase in space. This is least likely mainly due the fact that it isn’t ready for shipment until next year and has quite a lot of kinks to work out.
