In an interview Samsung Younghee Lee talks about Samsung's VR plans.

Samsung leads the mobile phone based virtual reality segment with the Gear VR. The South Korean consumer electronics company partnered with Facebook's Oculus for software and VR content. As reported, Oculus is rolling out a new Oculus Home update to Gear VR users. In that report I talked about that it is only a matter of time that Samsung will introduce a high-end VR headset that competes with the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing IT & Mobile Division Samsung Electronics. just talked about this in an interview with Taiwan's Apple Daily. Younghee Lee explains that Samsung is much more conservative than Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg about the growth of the virtual reality market.

She said that in her view VR is in the early stages and that decent hardware needs 3 to 5 years to mature. The VR content will take up to 10 years to reach the quality that appeals to the mass market.

Samsung's decision to focus on Gear VR is driven by that view. The Gear VR is aimed at making VR popular. Younghee Lee does not rule out to develop a high-end VR headset similar to the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. The company seems though not to be in a hurry. The market for a high-end VR headset is apparently to small right now for Samsung to get into it. If Younghee Lee does not change her opinion we won't see a Samsung VR headset for another 3 years.
