Diabetes is such a vicious disease that it increases the chances of cardiac arrest by 50%.

Just by having high blood sugar as is seen in diabetes, you automatically increase your chances of getting a heart attack by 50%. Over 700,000 people were studied by researchers. They had been hospitalized due to a heart attack between the years 2003 and 2013. At least, 121,000 of them also had diabetes.

After removing any intervening causes that included age, gender, maladies and emergency procedures applied to the patients, the group of experts found a high contrast in those that survived and those that succumbed.

Those patients who had diabetes were 56% more likely to die of a heart attack . The condition which led to their mortality was often a blocked coronary artery.

This counted if they had ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). If they had non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) then they had a 39% chance of dying.

In this case the artery is only partly blocked. Diabetes remains the common background illness from which both heart-related issues arose in the first place. Diabetes seemed to be a burden on top of a burden for those who had heart disease.

While more and more people are surviving heart attacks, those who have diabetes need to be extra vigilant. Links between general practitioners, cardiologists and diabetologists need to be forged on a long term basis in order to cater to those people who have heart disease and diabetes as well.

The role of medications cannot be overemphasized enough in the management of symptoms. The core question to answer is what exactly it is about diabetes patients that makes them prone to deadly heart attacks.

Why they cannot survive a heart attack still needs to be determined. Whether this was due to some other ailment that was present alongside the diabetes remains a moot point.

All the evidence points towards the reason for dying by a heart attack being simply having diabetes rather than any other extraneous factor. New curative measures will need to be taken in the future.

It is ultimately a matter of keeping the heart vessels healthy. The struggle is one in which each heartbeat counts. Finally, the management of diabetes leads to a respite from the ravages of CV disease.

Among the precautions are: a good diet, regular exercise and taking your medications on a daily basis. It is crucial that those who have diabetes get all the help they can from the medical establishment in the long run. Their very lives depend upon it.

The study is published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.
