The reach of the internet is impressive. There are 3.4 billion people online at any given time - that's a little over 46% of the population! Young adults, who tend to spend the most time online, spend an average of 27 hours online each week. A lot of this is thanks to having smartphones in our pockets and purses at all times.
Still, the stats from Internet Live Stats, a website that pulls information from 250 web sources to guess what's happening online, are extremely eye-opening:
Every second sees about 35,950 Gb of traffic, which is about 5,800 HD copies of the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. It is broken up into a lot of different pieces: 54,907 Google searches, 7,252 tweets, 125,406 YouTube video views, and 2,501,018 emails per second. The numbers show no sign of going down anytime soon.
Internet Live Stats also says that there are a little over 1 billion websites in use today. Close to 1.7 billion people have signed up for Facebook.
The numbers just keep rising and show no signs of stopping. In fact, by the time you are finished reading this article, the data will be out of date.
A lot of companies share their own stats too, just to declare their dominance. For instance, Netflix has disclosed that users watch 125 million hours of streaming content each day.
