  • Our Planet is at Risk of being Struck by an Asteroid

Scientists warn that our planet is at risk of being struck by an asteroid.

The planet earth could be the target of an asteroid in the future. While there is no immediate danger, the future does not look to be very rosy. In order to prevent such a catastrophe, scientists have nominated June 30th (which happens to be today) as Asteroid Day.

This day information regarding any threats to the earth from asteroids hurtling through space will be discussed. Also solutions will be generated that will do away with the threat.

Asteroid Day is basically meant to occur annually in order to gather more know-how about asteroids. Also other topics of interest such as the beginnings of our cosmos and means of warding off or exploding asteroids headed towards the earth will be explored today.

Several museums and science hubs will be supporting this cause. Besides this, video clips will be shown to the public and greater awareness regarding asteroids will be spread among the masses. NASA is involved in the initiative too. All that can be done is being seen through by the joint effort.

Asteroid Day is occurring on the anniversary of the Tunguska Event. This happened when an asteroid fell in Siberia, Russia in 1908, bringing about a great deal of devastation in its wake.

The shockwaves were so great that people sitting in chairs were thrown as far away as 40 miles away from their original site. There are over a million asteroids that may hit the surface of the earth in the future, according to CNN.

Yet only a small percentage of them are even within our ambit of awareness. More knowledge needs to be gathered on the problem and then everything has to be done to solve the issue on an extensive basis.

The asteroid discovery rate will have to be improved till it is 100,000 greater than it is today. This target must be met within the next decade. As the collective wisdom regarding the universe increases among human beings, it is dawning upon the human race that it is living on this planet on a temporary basis. Asteroids are on a collision course with the earth every century.

However, they are not as devastating as some rare occurrences such as the Tunguska Event. Whereas we do not need to get alarmed just yet, we would be all the wiser for being careful in the future since anything unexpected could happen.
