Breaking News: Chris Evans, new host of Top Gear, gives up and leaves the show.

Chris Evans gives up. He just took to Twitter and announced that he will step down from the struggling Top Gear.

"Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that's not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best." The resignation comes on the heals of reports that co-host Matt LeBlanc threatened to quit the show if Evans does not leave.

The new season of Top Gear, which is the first without Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, lost a huge number of viewers. The ratings reached a absolute low on Saturday with 1.9m viewers.

Matt LeBlanc reportedly complained about a frosty atmosphere on set caused by Evans.

Chris Evans focuses again on his other jobs: "Full steam ahead then with Radio 2, CarFest, Children In Need, 500 Words and whatever else we can dream up in the future."

It is not clear yet what Chris Evans departure will mean to Top Gear going forward. Will the BBC hire a new host or will Matt LeBlanc take the lead? It will be hard to bring this car show back to what it was under Jeremy Clarkson.

Fans of the original Top Gear show will all flock to Amazon's new car show hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Hammond and May. The Grand Tour will premiere this Fall on Amazon Prime.
