Having gained critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, Loving is based on the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving. The trailer gives us a look at the story of an interracial couple played by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga who were arrested in Virginia for violating Virginia’s anti-miscegenation law. The law stated that white people cannot marry coloured people.
Soon after Mildred expects their first child, they drive to Washington D.C. to get married. They come back to Virginia where they walk lovingly hand in hand as husband and wife. They are spotted by some citizens and reported. They are then arrested in the middle of the night and remain in jail, apart before their case is heard in the court.
We learn that they are asked to leave Virginia and never return. However, Mildred and Richard want to go back home to Virginia. At one point Mildred (Negga) says that she wants to have her children in Virginia because that’s her home. Richard promises his wife that they would build them a home there. They raise their voice for their marriage.
American Civil Liberties Union takes up their case. Eventually they go all the way to the Supreme Court, resulting in the end of America's miscegenation laws. The trailer documents some beautiful scenes between Joel’s Richard and Ruth’s Mildred and their stances on their marriage throughout. At the end of the trailer when his lawyer asks him what he wants him to say in the Supreme Court, he says to tell them that he loves his wife.
The trailer itself sets an emotional yet powerful tone for the storytelling we can expect from the movie. Joel’s blonde appearance is really a startling change but his emotion comes through in every scene while Negga delivers an exuberant power in every shot. Cannes has already called the movie a historically accurate depiction. The trailer has generated some buzz for the Oscars already.
