Lionsgate is reportedly moving the premiere of the fourth Divergent Series movie to TV which will lead to a spin-off series.
The golden rule of franchises might not work for all franchises. Especially the franchises based on book series. The movies have to follow the books, usually spanned over three or four movies and the cast signs up contracts for over five years to star in the movies.

The studios have to work hard to make the movie appeal to the readers as well as non-readers. For most franchises, the first movie is the introduction and usually gets a lot of hype. Over the course of movies, the series’ start to lose people’s interest.
We have seen this happen to a multitude of series in the past few years. The Hunger Games franchise reached its epitome with Catching Fire. After that the two movies that came failed to get the same attention as the second part had. The movies however managed to stay in theaters as the last part was released last year.
The same could not be said about Divergent series. Based on the book series by Veronica Roth, the series follow the main characters Tris and Four in a future dystopian colony where young people are put into factions based on their inherent traits.
Tris turns out to be Divergent and is helped by her allies to break the rule of Erudite faction to go out and discover the world beyond the walls of the colony.
The first movie was a commercial success starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Zoe Kravitz and Miles Teller. The movie earned close to worldwide total of $288 million.
The following movie Insurgent did well on the box office but not as well as the first movie. By the time, the third movie Allegiant was released earlier this year, it only managed to earn $177 million to date.
In these times, studio supporting the movie has to make wise decisions about where and how the series should end. Lionsgate has supposedly taken a decision and it looks like the Divergent series last part which was scheduled to premiere earlier next year is going to be moved to television. The studios has been set up to release the movie on TV and it will then lead to a spin off series with a similar plot.
