Secretary of State John Kerry has said that air conditioners and ISIS are both equally dangerous. This seemingly odd statement may yet hold a small kernel of truth within it.
John Kerry made a statement regarding air conditioners and refrigerators being as much of a threat as ISIS to the US of A. According to Kerry, ISIS is not the only danger to the world’s sole superpower.
Kerry was in Vienna when he made this statement. He was there to make amendments to the 1987 Montreal Protocol. This agreement was meant to decrease HFCs that were polluting the environment.
These HFCs are often found in fridges, air conditioners and inhalers. Kerry reiterated the fact that besides the war on terrorism, this cleaning up of HFCs from the environment was another important aspect of making life secure for our future generation.
According to The Washington Examiner, John Kerry claimed that HFCs are much more dangerous than they are portrayed to be. They are in fact more of a threat than CO2. HFCs are basically responsible for the current global climate change crisis.
Furthermore, the use of HFCs is growing with each passing day. This is clearly a disaster and a catastrophe in the making. Gigatons of pollutants are being released into the climate of the earth thanks to these HFCs.
Kerry said that if this sounded like it was way too much pollution, than the world ought to wake up to the urgency and reality of global warming. We have no time to lose.
The current emission rate of HFCs is equal to the output from 300 coal-fired power plants on an annual basis. The ratification of the Montreal Protocol will go a long way towards shrinking the extent of the ozone hole.
Meanwhile, the right wing pundits have taken the innocuous statement by Kerry and made it sound like he was saying that refrigerators are as vile as ISIS.
Of course, he never said such a thing. Some people never learn to keep things in their right contextual basis. The right wing parties started the mudslinging by labeling Kerry and the Obama administration as being soft on terrorism.
Kerry actually mentioned ISIS and terrorism as scourges that deserve as much (if not more) emphasis as the erasure of HFCs from certain home appliances.

He never meant to say that a comfort-giving home appliance is equal in value to a terrorist group. He was just lending a little perspective to the dangers faced by humanity in today’s fast-paced scenario.
