Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks August 11-12
  • The Perseid Meteor Shower lies ahead in the Middle of August

It is the case that the Perseid meteor shower lies ahead in the middle of August.

All stargazers ought to start preparing for an event that is likely to transpire soon. They will have to stay up late. What they will get to view in return is a beautiful array of shooting stars.

These will set the night sky on fire. The Perseid meteor shower is well-known for its fast and brightly lit meteors. It will provide the skygazers with an ideal opportunity to notice the beauty and wonder of the delightful display in the firmament.

The Perseids appear on an annual basis during the month of August. This is the time when the earth passes through flotsam and jetsam left behind by an age-old comet.

In 2016, our planet earth may be in for a closer interaction with the Perseids than it has had in previous times. The forecast is that the spectacular display will be double that of erstwhile times this year.

Now that is a treat indeed for all those who like to scan the night sky. The period of maximum activity will be from August 11th to 12th.

The rate of brilliance could reach a peak of 200 meteors per hourly basis. This is only under ideal conditions though. The last time it was this brilliant was seven years ago.

The meteors in the shower are pieces of the comet Swift-Tuttle. This goes around the sun every 133 years. Countless small debris like particles are left in the wake of the comet.

Many of these disintegrate in a blaze of glory every time they strike with the atmosphere of the earth. The meteors are termed Perseids since they seemingly fly out of the constellation Perseus.

Mostly each year, the earth barely grazes the southern portion of the Swift-Tuttle comet. There is less activity in the debris stream found there. On rare occasions, the earth goes through the middle and here there is plenty of activity.

This year happens to be such a time when the activity is at its maximum. So it is an ideal opportunity for stargazers to gather and look up towards the heavens in search of the brilliant Perseid meteor shower.
