It is not only an occupational hazard waiting to happen but also something which has finally managed to capture the imagination of insurance companies. The Russian SberBank, which is a large Moscow-based bank and life insurance company, has offered free accident-coverage to Pokemon Go players.
These are the sort of dudes and lasses who visit PokeStops near the bank’s branches in the city that houses the Kremlin. The heads of the bank said that they noticed the worldwide spike in accidents and mishaps due to the game being played with such enthusiasm and carefree abandon.
So they decided to do something about the unnecessary accidents that were a concomitant of getting lost within the context of the highly addictive game.
Accidents and mishaps were appearing in the headlines of newspapers on a global level. Someone had to do something about all this negative fallout from such a positive thing.
The head of the bank mentioned that seeing all the stumbles and falls that were occurring due to the game, they decided to create a special product that would be freely given to the players.
“As the biggest life insurance company in Russia, we feel our responsibility for the participants of Pokémon Go, the game that gains immense popularity now. Considering the number of news from around the world about players being injured while catching Pokémon, we created a special product that will be free for the players. It is also important for us that the product will help to raise the financial literacy of the population: while playing, the younger generation will be able to get acquainted with such financial tool as insurance”, Maxim Chernin, head of IC Sberbank Life Insurance.
The game is just a month old and already there have been several very serious accidents due to the enthusiasm it has generated.
In the USA, a woman fell into a ditch while playing it and broke her foot. Another person had an accident with a car on a highway. Two men walked off a cliff in their mindlessness in California and were severely injured.
Pokemon players have not only been mugged by robbers but have managed to crash their vehicles into police cars in the process of hunting for the virtual monsters in the game’s context.
One of the players drove his van into a police car. He was later on reported to have said that “This is what I get for playing this dumb (expletive) game.” So far SberBank is the only insurance offering agent in the world.
Pokemon Go players will be flocking to this institution for the sake of getting some accident coverage. There is another objective behind the bank’s offer.
