This satellite has been termed Overview 1. It will reach the ISS soon. That is aboard the SpaceX CRS-12 Mission. Then it will enter low earth orbit and continue to scan our home planet.
SpaceVR has the goal of allowing everyone to gaze in curiosity and wonderment at the living universe via virtual reality. Overview 1 will employ 4K sensors in its repertoire of technological feelers to capture high resolution 360 degree videos of all that happens on our home, spaceship earth.
This content will be worth looking at through a number of VR devices. This is a dream of humanity that has come true. It emerged at a hackathon approximatey one year and six months ago. While the plan seemed more like a wild goose chase, it actually panned out in the end.
Now finally the pieces are beginning to fit in the jigsaw puzzle that was this bold and intrepid venture. This journey into where no man has gone before began many years ago. Also today’s pioneers have the humility to acknowledge the fact that they are standing on the shoulders of giants.
The launch of such a wondrous enterprise in space was a long time in the pipeline. Finally it is about to become a solid reality. To connect viewers throughout our planet with the infinite beauty of space is the worthy objective of this plan.
“My dream, when I first had this idea at a hackathon 1.5 years ago, was to launch a VR satellite with NanoRacks. It seemed crazy and borderline unachievable. Now we are signed, paid, and moving towards something exponentially more borderline unachievable,” said Ryan Holmes, the founder and CEO of SpaceVR.
“This is the most important milestone to date for SpaceVR and we’re honored to share it with a group of pioneers that have been pushing what’s achievable since before we were born. Let’s launch cool shit into space!”
NanoRacks has been a partner, investor, and advisor of SpaceVR since its establishment in 2015.
“We are delighted that yet another innovative space company has chosen NanoRacks to realize their in-space dreams. SpaceVR promises to open a new era in connecting consumers worldwide to the beauty of outer space and we are ready to be part of that effort,” believes Jeffrey Manber, NanoRacks CEO.
The funding for this project involved a raising of $1.25 million. That target was accomplished in April of this year. SpaceVR is currently seeking companies that want to become partners with it in this daring venture.
