This will involve a new spacecraft termed Prospector-1. This will land on an asteroid as it makes its journey close to the earth. There is no gold or platinum deposits it will be bringing back to the home planet though.
It will make a map of the surface features of the asteroid. Also rock samples from the asteroid will be processed and analyzed.
Prospector-1 will be a tiny craft that will have a weight of just 110 pounds. It will tolerate radiation as far as its payloads are concerned and have avionics features like its predecessor.
While mining asteroids for precious metals and resources still lies in the future, when 2020 comes along, the asteroid will have water samples taken from it.
The spacecraft will also be using a water-based thrust source rather than rocket fuel. Thus its resources will be replenished without any return forays to the earth.
The first asteroid the firm will pick will be from a long list of candidates. The surface of this asteroid will be mapped using visual and infrared cameras.
Also the water content of the asteroid will be determined using complex equipment. Once it has landed on an asteroid, it will be the first space base in all of human history to exist on a solid heavenly body.
This will furnish the way for future asteroid mining for metals and materials that are of great use to humanity. It is indeed a big step in the direction of bold and intrepid space exploration on the part of human beings.
By making do with the land available in outer space, the stage of sustainable space journeys is a possibility. This step will have been taken before the end of this decade.
The rich supply of metallic ores that lie just waiting to be discovered in space is something which makes the heart glad. It shows that mankind yet holds great potential as an exploratory being. Such low cost space technologies are the wave of the future and will revolutionize space travel like never before.
