The Crystal Serenity happens to be the largest cruise ship to attempt to travel the Northwest Passage. This will most likely be a dangerous journey though.

The most daring and adventurous sea voyage is about to begin. The 1070 passengers who will travel the Crystal Serenity seem excited. Or is it a bit of fear that things may not go as well as they are supposed to?

This is the largest cruise liner that will attempt to cross the Northwest Passage. Towards the evening time, this humongous ship will set sail from Alaska. It will sail for 32 days and move from Canada and Greenland all the way to New York. This will be a thousand mile voyage.

It is essentially a 900 mile short cut that links the Pacific with the Atlantic Ocean. The terrain is the icy upper frontier of North America. This region is notorious for having caused the death of many an explorer.

In the past century and ten years, there have been 240 transits through the area. Since 2007, the passage has been pretty much ice-free especially during the summer months.

The CEO of Crystal Serenity spoke of how the line had gone beyond self-interest to fulfill the requests to take the ship into areas of virgin wilderness.

A lot of efforts have gone into ensuring that the cruise’s passage through the pristine environment does not in any way ruin it like most tourism development plans tend to do so. Crystal Serenity is not the first of its kind to make this bold and intrepid journey.

The Lindblad Explorer was was the first one to carry passengers in 1984. In 2012, The World, another cruise liner took 481 passengers across the region.

Yet the difference lies in the dimensions. The Crystal Serenity is the largest of its kind to attempt the voyage. It has 13 decks, is 820 feet in length and weighs 68,870 tons.

Size of course is not everything. It tends to present a traveling problem through the region which this cruise liner is meant to traverse. Only 10% of the waterways have been mapped until now.

Among the dangers that lie in store are: jagged rocks, insidious shallows and treacherous currents. Many times in the past times, accidents have occurred.

So the passengers’ apprehension can be well understood. The Crystal Serenity will have an icebreaker provide it with logistics and guidance during its journey.
