A few weeks ago while accepting his second consecutive Emmy for Transparent, Jeffrey Tambor, the star of the show, made a few statements that resonated with fans. He pleaded with Hollywood to give transgender actors a chance to shine - in roles playing themselves and in roles playing others.
As it turns out, ABC's Modern Family was already working on casting transgender talent. Wednesday's episode will feature Jackson Millarker, a transgender child actor. The 8-year-old Atlanta native will play Tom, a friend of Lily who comes over for a playdate.
The episode will feature Lily making fun of Tom, and that is overhead by her fathers, Mitchell and Cameron. Thy will have an important discussion about acceptance and what it means to treat everyone equally.
The show has pushed the boundaries quite often, creating stories that not only touched the hearts of viewers and won critical awards, it also was a beacon of hope for actors who didn't want to play stereotyped versions of themselves.
There have been rumors about the casting for a few weeks, but it has now been confirmed by the episode's director, Ryan Chase, who introduced him on Instagram as an actor "who just happens to be transgender."
