Apparently the premature use of marijuana may cause among other things, brain problems and low intelligence.

A novel study proves that early usage of marijuana which is a soft intoxicant may result in lower IQ and abnormal brain function. Those who start participating in the inhalation of the drug at a relatively young age may face greater chances of cognitive decline and psychiatric issues.

Among some of the psychological disorders they contracted were bipolar illness, depression and schizophrenia.

One of the researchers has studied mood and anxiety issues in marijuana users. She said that many of the youthful individuals in the sample that was studied were heavily dependent on marijuana.

They thought that the drug would help them and they would be free of stress thanks to the occasional puff of marijuana they took. Yet such was hardly the case.

Their symptoms worsened over the passage of time. While marijuana use does cause momentary satisfaction, in the long run its effects can be very exasperating.

Therefore the study delved into the long term effects of marijuana use. What it found surprised even the scientists who knew about the ill effects of regular marijuana use among the youth population.

The youth were divided into four groups. There were those with depression who didn’t use marijuana. Then there were the depressed lot who did use it. The third category was young people who didn’t have depression but used marijuana.

Finally, the last group consisted of those who didn’t use marijuana and didn’t have depression either. Later on these were also divided into those who used the drug before 17 years of age and those who used it after that age or didn’t use it at all. Many tests were taken of the participants and their brain scans were also taken.

Marijuana was not found to ease the symptoms of the individuals who participated in the study. Those with depression didn’t get saved thanks to marijuana use from the disease.

Those who had depression and didn’t use marijuana also faced the onslaught of the symptoms of the devastating disease. Yet among some of the youth population, the depressive symptoms got worse thanks to marijuana use.

The earlier use of marijuana was linked with issues in spatial processing, memory, self-referential acts and the reward centers in the brain. Also IQ suffered a substantial drop thanks to marijuana use.

Some genetic factors may also make some of the members of the youth population partial to becoming regular marijuana users from an early age.
