In a statement released online Stephen Lebovitz President & CEO CBL & Associates Properties, Inc. explains why the mall operator decided to keep its malls closed on Thanksgiving Day 2016. "Over the last few years, we’ve watched as the magic of Black Friday has been diminished by an earlier start to the holiday shopping season. Gone are the days of waking before dawn to hunt for deals and doorbusters. Well, not this year. We’re happy to announce that our malls will be closed this year on Thanksgiving and will open for Black Friday at 6 am. We want you to spend Thanksgiving with family and friends and come fresh and excited to spend Black Friday with us. So enjoy that extra plate of pie at dinner, take a long afternoon nap, set your alarm and wake up with us to bring back the magic of Black Friday."
Black Friday has changed dramatically over the past years. The driving force behind the change is online shopping. The Black Friday sales kicked off earlier and earlier online. Brick and Mortar retailers adjusted their Black Friday store hours to keep up.
Black Friday 2016 is shaping up to be different. It would make Black Friday shopping more organized as shoppers could first try to get deals in online Black Friday sales and then head out to malls on Friday morning.
To make this really work that way, Walmart, BestBuy, Target and other large retail chains need to keep closed too on Thanksgiving Day. So far these retailers have not made any announcements about their Black Friday 2016 sales schedule. Large stores with external entrances at closed malls can decide to open on Thanksgiving Day. If most of the mall is closed, the shopping experience is kind of damaged though.
The Black Friday 2016 sale at Park Plaza mall in Little Rock and other CBL owned malls will open for Black Friday 2016 sales at 6am on Black Friday.
There are over 40 stores known to be closed on Thanksgiving Day. America's largest mall, Mall of America, announced earlier this month to stay closed on Thanksgiving Day.
