Tomorrow, June 16th the MSI Wind U100 netbook is going on sale. From what I have gathered so far the MSI Wind is giving the latest Asus Eee generation (Asus Eee 901 and Asus Eee 1000) a run for the money.
I was dissapointed when I saw the price of the Asus Eee PC 901. The Asus Eee 901 will sell for $599. The MSI Wind with Windows XP will sell for only $499, which I think is a fair price for what you get.
On top of the lower price, the MSI Wind beats the Asus Eee 901 in terms of screen-size and storage capacity. The MSI Wind has a 10 inch LED backlit screen and a 80GB HDD. The Asus Eee PC 901 has an 8.9 inch screen and 12GB SSD (XP). Now you might think the solid state disk is the killer advantage over the MSI Wind in terms of boot time and app load time. According to Laptop Magazine the boot time of the MSI Wind is actually faster than on the Asus Eee PC 901. They also tested swapping the MSI Wind HDD with a SSD, but the performance did not increase.
At this point in time, I suggest buying the MSI Wind instead of the Asus Eee. Asus needs to price the Asus Eee PC 901 lower than the MSI Wind to compete. The 10 inch Asus Eee PC 1000 with the HDD is supposedly going to sell for $649. This model would actually directly compete with the MSI Wind, but the price is just way too high.
Asus created the netbook category with the first generation of the Eee PCs. If they are not careful they will loose their current dominance very quickly. The market will get very crowded now, only the MSI Wind is currently managing to stand out.
