Japan's Toyota ranked first in global auto sales for the first half of 2008, surpassing its U.S. rival General Motors.
GM's first-half sales fell 2.9% year on year to 4,540,409 units due to weak demand in its home market, while Toyota's sales, including those by group firms Hino Motors and Daihatsu Motor Co., rose 2.2% to 4,817,941 units.
Last year, Toyota led GM in the first half by about 40,000 units, but GM outperformed Toyota in the second half and maintained its top position in full-year sales with a margin of 3,106 units.
This year, however, with its lead in the first half exceeding 270,000 units, Toyota aims to be the world's number one in full-year sales.
