Currently Netbooks run Windows XP and Linux. The low-end models sure run better with Linux because Windows XP needs more resources. For Windows fans Windows CE would be the solution to run on the cheapest netbooks.
Quarta Mobile has now announced the development of an open source shell to enable enthusiasts and netbook makers to install Windows Embedded CE 6.0 on netbooks.
The company starts with the Acer Aspire One and the Lenovo IdeaPad S9.
The download of the Windows CE shell is supposed to be available soon.
