The Boy Genius Report, erm, reports that Google may be working on a desktop operating system to go along with its Android OS for smartphones. Much like any rumor there is little to substantiate it at this point other than some very curious findings from Net Applications.

According to the research firm with sensors placed on over 40,000 websites it is seeing a significant increase in traffic coming from Google employees that is masked. The masking of the about 1/3 of the traffic coming out of Google has the OS agent stripped off. Only the OS information is clipped from the traffic leaving the IP, browser and other info intact.

BGR quotes Net Applications saying, "We have never seen an OS stripped off the user agent string before. I believe you have to arrange to have that happen, it’s not something we’ve seen before with a proxy server. All I can tell you is there’s a good percentage of the people at Google showing up [at Web pages] with their OS hidden." Scuttlebutt says that this is an expanded version of Android that could be running on PCs.
